DUBLIN OPEN JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS 29/09/24
After some time away, the BJC National Squad attended their first international championships in Dublin Ireland. National Squad coaches selected ten Judoka to compete based on their past squad attendances, attitudes, abilities and competition results.
Some competitors travelled the night before with parents, whilst the others flew out and returned on the day with the coaches and first aider from three different airports. We were met at the airport and driven by minibus to the venue by the competition organisers, which was excellent.
The venue was more than adequate with two mat areas, plenty of seating, an on- site shop and café for refreshments. Our squad of competitors weighed in on time but due to a lack of numbers, certain weight categories were amalgamated which was no problem as our fighters were more than up for the challenge.
The competition was underway on time at 10:30 starting with our junior lightweights, followed by the girls and seniors in the afternoon. As coaches we observed some great attacking fighting with all the squad showing, great tenacity, grit and determination, whilst also taking on constructive instructions, enabling them to perform better in their contests. Stand out performances came from Isaac Avison, throwing with some big Ippons and Charlotte Haines who dominated in two weight categories. Excellent to see was squad members great attitudes even in defeat, showing a real Judo spirit. As coaches we were approached by some of the other competitors and organisers, who were really impressed by our standard of Judo, this was nice to hear and shows that the BJC National Squad are a force to be reckoned with!
To sum up, the competition was a fantastic day for our BJC National Squad with everyone gaining vital experience and confidence to go forward in our next international competition. Well done to all of our competitors and thanks for the support of all the parents, coaches and our first aider, we definitely did the BJC proud.
